Unifac Modeling of Multicomponent Nonaqueous Phase Liquids Containing Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

چکیده
Multicomponent nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminants that are mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are examined using UNIFAC. The NAPL phase activity coefficients for constituent compounds of four different coal tar materials are estimated. The group contribution approach is adapted to describe representative molecular structures of the uncharacterized fractions of the tar materials, determined from average molecular weights and nonparametric regressions of the functional group parameters against molecular weight. The molecular structure characterization of the tars elucidates the similar chemistry of the materials from different sites, despite their different chemical compositions. Nearly ideal behavior is predicted for most tar constituents, with the majority of activity coefficients in the range of 0.9 to 1.1. These results provide a firm theoretical basis for an assumption of NAPL-phase ideality for many tar constituents. The robustness of this conclusion is indicated through comparable results across different tar materials and through a sensitivity analysis of the effect of the estimated characteristics of the uncharacterized fractions. Multiple mechanisms contribute to the biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene by petroleum-derived multicomponent nonaqueous-phase liquids.
The presence of multicomponent nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs) on contaminated sites critically alters the biodegradation susceptibility of many target pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. This study investigated the effects of petroleum-derived multicomponent NAPLs on biodegradation of benzo[a]pyrene by a bacterial consortium in liquid culture. When high-boiling point diese...

A study was conducted to determine the effect of nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs) on the bioavailability of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in soil. Sentry 19 oil and pristane reduced the availability of BaP for assimilation by the earthworm Eisenia fetida and for mutagenicity in a rifampicin-sensitive strain of Pseudomonas putida. As much as 80% of the compound could be rendered unavailable to the worms ...
متن کاملPhase Stability of Multicomponent NAPLs Containing PAHs
Multicomponent nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminants that contain compounds that are solids in their pure states can undergo phase transformations. This paper examines the relationship between NAPL composition and liquid phase stability for mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), most of which are solids in pure form at ambient temperatures. Because any natural or engineered ...

A study was conducted on the effect of two different biological factors, microbial surfactants and biodegradation, on the kinetics of partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs). The effect of rhamnolipid biosurfactants on partitioning into the aqueous phase of naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene, initially dissolved in di-2-ethylhex...
متن کاملLong-Term Composition Dynamics of PAH-Containing NAPLs and Implications for Risk Assessment
Subsurface contaminants such as coal tar, creosote, diesel fuel, and other petroleum-derived materials typically exist as very complex chemical mixtures. Risk assessment is useful for site management if a single metric can represent the composition-dependent risk profile of the mixture. This paper examines the factors governing human health risk assessment for multicomponent nonaqueous phase li...
